Catharine is a partner in Ward Hadaway's Health and Care Advisory Team and has over 15 years' experience of civil, coronial and inquest law having represented private custodial service operators, police forces, NHS Trusts, Mental Health Trusts, Care Homes, Charities, Education Trusts and Private healthcare providers.

Inquest and Coronial Procedure Experience

Catharine has extensive experience of representing clients at inquest and has represented private custodial service operators, operators of immigration removal centres as well as those providing escorting and custody services, forensic medical services, patient transport services and GP out of hours medical services. She also regularly acts for NHS Trusts, Charities and Education Trusts.

Catharine regularly represents clients at Inquest and has particular expertise where there are complex issues of drug or alcohol withdrawal, suicide, neglect and unlawful killing. She has extensive experience of Article 2, jury and multi-agency inquests and conducts her own advocacy.
The work that Catharine undertakes can often be high profile attracting public scrutiny requiring careful management of reputational risk. Catharine regularly works in conjunction with her clients’ press officers advising them on the content of intended press releases.

Court of Protection Experience

Catharine has been involved in a number of Mental health, capacity and care, and deprivation of liberty cases and regularly acts on behalf of Integrated Care Boards in the Court of Protection in respect of s21A MCA challenges and DoLs authorisation matters.

Catharine is also an active member of Ward Hadaway’s Urgent Response Team, providing 24 hr support for Healthcare Trust clients.

Wider Experience

Catharine has considerable experience representing insurance companies and their policy holders whether at inquest or in respect of civil claims brought against policy holders. She also has experience of dealing with fraudulent personal injury claims on behalf of insurance companies and representing police forces in respect of police malfeasance claims.

Catharine has represented clients being investigated by the CQC/HSE/CPS for corporate/gross negligence manslaughter and has been instructed in respect of civil claims and judicial reviews arising out of inquest matters.

Catharine also routinely provides bespoke training to clients which has previously included inquests, advocacy and court skills, and the preparation of witness statements.
