What is the High Potential Individual Visa?
The High Potential Individual visa allows recent graduates from leading overseas universities to live and work in the UK without employer sponsorship. The visa runs for two years (bachelor’s/master’s), or three years for PhD holders. There’s a cap of 8,000 applicants per year.
Who can apply for the HPI visa?
- Graduates with a degree from an eligible university in the Home Office Global Universities List, awarded within five years.
- Degree must be UK‑equivalent at bachelor’s or above, confirmed by UK NARIC/Ecctis.
- No age limit, but must meet English language (CEFR B2 from 8 Jan 2026) and maintenance (£1,270 held for 28 days) requirements.

What you can and cannot do
You can:

You cannot:
- Claim most public funds.
- Work in professional sports.
- Extend the HPI visa or apply for settlement while on it.
Recent updates
- Eligibility expanded to include graduates from the top 100 global universities (list updated 4 Nov 2025).
- Annual cap of 8,000 places now enforced.
- English requirement raised to CEFR B2 from 8 Jan 2026.
HPI application process & costs
- Apply online via GOV.UK; those switching in the UK may also apply online.
- Decision time: three weeks (outside UK); eight weeks (inside UK).
- Costs: visa fee, Immigration Health Surcharge per year, maintenance of £1,270 unless already in the UK.
- May require a TB test depending on country of residence.
Switching & long-term options
- Cannot extend within HPI route, but may switch to Skilled Worker, Global Talent, Innovator, or Scale-up visas before expiry.
- HPI stay does not count toward ILR qualifying period.
