What is naturalisation?

Naturalisation is the legal process for adults (aged 18+) to acquire British citizenship under the British Nationality Act 1981. It is not automatic—you must meet strict eligibility criteria and submit a detailed application using Form AN. Once approved, you’ll attend a citizenship ceremony, take an oath or affirmation of allegiance, and receive your Certificate of Naturalisation.

  • 90 days in the last 12 months.
• Meet the English language requirement and pass the Life in the UK Test.
• Are of good character (no serious criminal or immigration breaches).

• Good Character Policy Tightened – Applications will normally be refused if you entered the UK illegally, regardless of how long ago, unless there are compelling circumstances.
• Digital Application Enhancements – Online submission and document upload via UKVCAS.
• Fee Increase – Standard naturalisation fee is now £1,630, including the citizenship ceremony.
• Processing Times – Average 6 months, but delays up to 9 months possible due to backlogs.
• Automatic BRP return requirement – You must return your Biometric Residence Permit after approval.

Application process

1. Check eligibility – confirm residence, status, and language requirements.
2. Pass the Life in the UK Test and meet English language criteria.
3. Complete Form AN online and pay the fee.
4. Upload supporting documents (passport, ILR proof, residence evidence).
5. Attend biometric appointment at a UKVCAS centre.
6. Await decision – usually within 3–6 months.
7. Attend citizenship ceremony – take the oath and receive your certificate.
