Ward Hadaway’s Built Environment Team celebrates record year

Ward Hadaway has announced growth of more than 11% in the annual turnover of its Built Environment Team, totalling more than £12.8 million in the financial year to end of April 2019. This represents approximately a third of the firm's overall turnover.

Whilst celebrating their commercial success, the team are also delighted at their contribution to developments that make a real difference to the communities in which they work.

The Built Environment Team is one of the largest within Ward Hadaway. It is made up of over 130 specialist lawyers, chartered town planners, plans technicians, plot sales specialists, and experienced support staff. Together they make up one of the largest and most diverse property teams of its kind in the region.

The team supports clients with a huge range of property-related needs, from acquisitions and disposals to development agreements, from planning matters to judicial reviews, from raising finance to negotiating overage, from social housing matters to plot sales, from construction disputes to mineral rights, and everything in between.

In achieving such significant growth, the team has worked on some very exciting projects across all of its key sectors in the last year. Examples of Ward Hadaway’s wide-ranging expertise can be demonstrated through their involvement with two winners of the 2019 RICS Awards North East, announced at the end of April.

A significant project which was recently opened after many years in the making is the Beacon of Light, the 2019 RICS

North East Project of the year undertaken by Foundation of Light, the registered charity of Sunderland AFC. This ambitious project has seen the building of a superb venue next to the stadium – a community hub which offers world class sporting facilities alongside first class education and training facilities for people of all ages. The firm recognises and values its responsibilities to the wider community in the North East and is extremely proud to have supported this project in all legal matters from the initial concept to final completion.

The development of Ravensworth Road in Dunston is another prime example. This complex, multi-purpose development involved a variety of Ward Hadaway’s specialists in housing, regeneration, planning, landlord and tenant, and commercial development. They worked together on this 2019 RICS award-winning scheme in the re-generation category with lead partner Keepmoat Homes, as well as Gateshead Council, Boots and registered provider Thirteen. This is one of many successful projects the team has delivered for major house builders, including long standing clients such as Barratt Homes and Story Homes.

Whilst the firm is a major presence in the legal markets of the regions in which it is located, its reach stretches far beyond the North East, Yorkshire and the North West. Ward Hadaway’s Built Environment Team work on projects nationwide for clients based in the UK and beyond, underlining both the quality of the legal expertise within the firm and the strength of the legal sector in the region as a whole.

The team is led in the North East by partners Lesley Fairclough, Robin Atkin and Tim Craig.
