On 15th January, we held an exclusive roundtable discussion ‘Unlocking Birmingham’s Housing Future’, co-hosted with Birmingham City Council.

Working in close partnership with Birmingham City Council’s leadership team, we convened this strategic dialogue to bring together the region’s most influential developers, housebuilders and housing associations with key civic leaders including West Midland’s Mayor, Richard Parker, Leader of Birmingham City Council, Cllr John Cotton, Deputy Leader of Birmingham City Council and Deputy Mayor to the West Midlands, Cllr Sharon Thompson and Helen Collins, Chair of the Homes Mayoral Taskforce.

This pivotal discussion builds on the comprehensive analysis presented in ‘The UK’s 10-Year Infrastructure Strategy: A Critical Analysis Through a Social Housing Lens’ – a White Paper co-authored by Ward Hadaway Affordable Housing Partner Joanna Lee-Mills, and Councillor Sharon Thompson, Deputy Leader of Birmingham City Council and Deputy Mayor of the West Midlands.

The paper, to be published later this month, explores how the Government’s £725 billion infrastructure commitment could transform social housing delivery across Birmingham and the Midlands and identifies practical pathways, including innovative funding mechanisms through the National Housing Bank, enhanced Section 106 arrangements, land value capture models and new collaborative delivery vehicles that could bridge the viability gap currently constraining development.

Although with a focus on the West Midlands, this will be of relevance to all those involved in the affordable housing and development space across the UK.
