Transwaste has grown its business from a single site near the Humber Bridge in 2002 to a company encompassing everything from skip hire to handling over 350,000 tonnes of waste a year.

As well as treating waste for customers ranging from companies to local authorities and Government organisations, the company also sells both quarried and recycled aggregates.

Chris Tute of Transwaste Recycling and Aggregates Limited, said: “We were not expecting this at all so it is fantastic to win.

“One of our strengths is that we recycle more of what we process – only a very small percentage goes to landfill – which means less landfill tax and more material recycled to be used again.

“There are still lots of opportunities for us going forward as well.”

Transwaste fought off stiff competition from man-made fibres supplier Lenzing Fibers Grimsby Limited and commercial gas supplier Contract Natural Gas Limited, who were second and third respectively, to win the Fastest Growing Large Business award.

Transwaste were not the only winners at the awards, organised and sponsored by Top 100 UK law firm Ward Hadaway in association with the Yorkshire Post.

MSM Foods Limited of Normanton was named as the Fastest Growing Small Business for an unprecedented third year in a row.

The food wholesaler has continued to expand its successful business supplying Polish food to a wide range of retailers nationwide.

Rafal Bieniek, general manager at MSM Foods, said the company’s success was due to “hard work and being responsible towards our customers”.

MSM Foods, which was started in 2008, is now expanding into supplying markets in Holland and Belgium.

MSM won the title ahead of specialist IT consultancy Blackapple Solutions Limited and road freight business Inter-Ways Limited who were second and third respectively in the small business category.

Auto-Silicone Hoses Ltd was named fastest growing medium-sized company of the year.

From its base in Mirfield, the company supplies a range of automotive parts including performance silicone hoses, hose clips, alloy pipes and air filters.

As well as selling direct to the public via online channels, Auto-Silicone Hoses also has customers including performance specialists, engine tuners, race and rally car preparation, specialist vehicle manufacturers and even Formula 1 teams.

Company founders Rob Matheson and Andrew Young started in business together as teenagers at school selling items on eBay.

Auto-Silicone Hoses now turns over £6.4m a year and employs over 60 people.

Rob Matheson said: “It was quite a shock to win. I think it’s down to knowing how to sell on the internet, having a good team around you and perseverance.”

Auto-Silicone Hoses won the award ahead of second-placed sealing and bearing products maker FTL Seals Technology Limited and third-placed steel frame specialist P.A.W. Structures Limited.

The winning companies and the runners-up were revealed before an audience of 200 Fastest 50 company representatives and Yorkshire business leaders at Aspire Leeds on Friday 14 March.

The chair of Leeds City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) Roger Marsh gave the keynote speech at the event, calling for more powers and more funding to be devolved to city regions to enable them to take control of their destinies.

The Yorkshire Post Business Editor Bernard Ginns introduced the awards, which reward profit-making privately-owned companies and organisations in the region which have shown the strongest sales growth over recent years.

Researchers at Bradford University School of Management compiled the Yorkshire Fastest 50 list for 2014.

Jamie Martin, managing partner at event sponsor and organiser Ward Hadaway, announced the award winners and spoke about the importance of support and teamwork in the business world.

Jamie said: “At Ward Hadaway, our success in growing our practice in Yorkshire and across the North has been built on the skills, aptitude and experience of our team with the vision, dynamism and determination of the great businesses, organisations and individuals we work with and support.

“I am sure that every business present at the Yorkshire Fastest 50 Awards would acknowledge that it is the strength, dedication and abilities of their employees and the support of their customers and suppliers that has brought them here as one of the 50 fastest growing companies across Yorkshire.

“Every one of the companies in the final 50 deserves congratulations for their achievements in growing their businesses successfully and sustainably and we salute their efforts.”
