Education Law Digest – autumn term: In the news

This update covers recent news developments for our autumn term 2026 Education Law Digest.

Teachers’ pay: 2026/27 and 2027/28 settled

The government has accepted in full the School Teachers’ Review Body’s 36th report, confirming pay awards of 3.5% from 1 September 2026 (5% for the minimum of the unqualified teacher range) and 3.0% from 1 September 2027, with a further 3.0% indicated for 2028/29, a compounded 9.8% over three years.

The draft School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document 2026 is out for consultation, with statutory consultees required to respond by 12:00 on 23 September 2026 and the final document expected around 16 October 2026. Schools should note that, while additional government funding is being provided, they are expected to fund the first 1% of each award from existing budgets so this is worth factoring into autumn budget planning.
