Ward Hadaway praised over care home group sale

ADVISERS from law firm Ward Hadaway have been praised for their role in the sale of a leading care home group.

Property, construction, finance and corporate lawyers from the Newcastle office of the UK Top 100 firm provided legal advice to the owners of Helen McArdle Care on the company’s sale to national operator HC-One.

Helen McArdle Care runs 19 homes, with one currently under construction, and a home care service and it was the first care provider in the UK to achieve four ‘outstanding’ gradings from the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

It is the latest transaction on which Ward Hadaway has advised the McArdle family, having provided legal advice on the sale of North East-based nursery business Kids 1st at the end of 2015.

Ward Hadaway Head of Corporate, Martin Hulls, said: “We are delighted to have assisted on the successful sale of Helen McArdle Care – it is a fantastic business created by a family passionate about what they do.

“Having worked with the McArdle family on the Kids 1st transaction, we were really pleased to have been called on again to help with this very important transaction.

“Our extensive experience in the care home sector, added to the ability to call on the specialist expertise of our colleagues in other teams across Ward Hadaway, ensured we were able to manage this substantial sale effectively and efficiently.

“We knew how important it was to the family not just to secure a successful sale for the business, but also to ensure that the many residents across the company’s care homes continued to receive the highest standards of care and support, so that is what we worked towards.”

Mark McArdle, director at Helen McArdle Care, said: “Having used Martin and his team on both the disposal of our nursery business, Kids 1st and our residential care business comprising 20 care homes I wanted to say how pleased we were with the whole team and the service they gave.

“It was first class advice with a human face – just what we wanted, so a great big thank you to everyone involved.

“I would have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone contemplating a corporate transaction.”

The sale of Helen McArdle Care is the latest in a series of recent transactions which the Corporate team at Ward Hadaway has advised on.

Last year, the firm provided legal advice on numerous deals including the sale of JBT Waste Services to Remondis, the sale of Gateshead-based Business Travel to Hays Travel and the £17m extension to the Finance for Business North East Fund.

Head of Corporate Martin Hulls is also the current North East Corporate Lawyer of the Year, having won the title in the North East Insider Dealmakers Awards 2016.
