Ex-servicemen and women can now access advice on a variety of legal issues affecting them and their families through new support services launched this month.
The family law team at the Manchester office of Ward Hadaway has worked together with SAMS Armed Forces Support Hub on a new website to give veterans improved accessibility to legal services.
SAMS Hub was created by Samantha Thompson three years ago to provide welfare support to ex-servicemen and women, past and present, their families and assist the homeless in the North West and now nationwide.
The charity hosts drop-in sessions, as well as a breakfast club each week at the Totally Wicked Stadium in St Helens, Merseyside, to help its members manage family, health and financial affairs.
The Ward Hadaway team, headed by Martin Karran, with the support of solicitors Sally Stanway and Jodi Seddon, helped create the legal content for the hub’s new website and also attended a recent breakfast session.
Martin said: “As a team this project fits with our broader philosophy of how lawyers should support the wider community. Showing our respect, creating opportunities and giving advice to veterans is vital. This is our way of offering ex-service personnel the best care and support as they leave the Forces.
“We will continue to provide advice primarily in family law matters of pre and post-nuptial agreements and arrangements for children, as well as the more traditional areas of dispute resolution on separation.”
Triple-amputee Andy Reid, who was injured while serving in Afghanistan, is a patron of SAMS Hub which also offers support with housing, mental health, benefits and debts, welfare, volunteering and employment for regulars, reservists, ex-Forces, veterans and their families.
The hub, which has 15 volunteers, has helped people who have struggled from homelessness or unemployment.
Samantha said: “It’s great to have a company like Ward Hadaway on board, helping our team here at SAMS Hub provide veterans and their families with much-needed support, help and advice.”
