Ward Hadaway law bursary winners announced

Ward Hadaway is pleased to announce the four winners of its annual law bursary scheme.

The firm’s four £1,000 bursaries are awarded to students from Northumbria and Newcastle Universities and are intended to help the North East’s budding young lawyers achieve excellence in their chosen careers.

In addition to the financial aspects of the bursaries, Ward Hadaway also provides work experience and provides the students with an assessment centre place in its graduate recruitment programme.

Past bursary winners Kerry McFarlane and Paige Lewis are among many bursary students who have gone on to secure training contracts with Ward Hadaway in its Newcastle office.

Kerry, who is a trainee in the Property team, said: “In the summer after my first year at university, I received a letter informing me I was one of the top 20 highest performing students and was eligible to apply for the Ward Hadaway Bursary scheme.  I was aware of Ward Hadaway as they have a strong link with Newcastle University and members of the firm had visited the Law School throughout my first year.

“I thought that the interview may be focused heavily on my academics, but it wasn’t like that at all. The panel seemed very keen to get to know me as an individual. We spoke about my hobbies, previous work experience, and my opinion of Newcastle, although that isn’t to say that there weren’t any challenging questions! I also explained why Ward Hadaway appealed to me as a firm, focusing on their key sectors and recent work in the community.

“I had a really positive experience during my work experience. I found the work interesting and varied and I really liked the atmosphere of the firm. I felt that everyone was friendly, down-to-earth and happy to help. The financial aspect of the bursary was also a great help, I worked throughout university, but it provided me with security in my final two years.

“The trainees at the time were very welcoming and they kindly shared their experiences of applying with me. The fact that Ward Hadaway is a full service firm really appealed to me (and still does!) and I knew Ward Hadaway would be my first choice.”

The firm’s law bursary award winners are: Emily Richardson, James Flint, Brianna Friberg and Faye McNulty. Work experience commenced in December 2018 and the students will return for a week between January and March 2019.

Caroline Jones, Recruitment & Development manager at Ward Hadaway, said: “We have been running the bursary scheme with the universities for around six years now.

“The opportunity is open to Newcastle University students who are in the top 20 highest performers in their first year and Northumbria University law students who achieve marks in the top 20% of marks in their first year.

“Students are interviewed by a dedicated panel of bursary interviewers from the firm’s Graduate Recruitment Team. It has always proved hugely successful and a number of students have gone on to get training contracts with us over the years.

“Most recently, two of the trainees who qualified as Solicitors with us in 2018 originally joined the firm as bursary students.”
