Angelo Basu | Associate, EU and Competition
Angelo has more than 15 years' experience in UK and EU Competition law and was previously at Pinsent Masons in Leeds, where he established and headed the firm’s competition team in the North.
In addition to advising on the full range of contentious and non-contentious competition law matters he also has strong capabilities in the regulatory regimes for communications, the regulated utilities and railways.
Initially trained as a barrister, in addition to practice in leading solicitors practices in London and the North, Angelo has also had substantial experience in-house in industry and within central government.
Experience
Angelo has led cases in a wide range of competition-related matters including advising companies on OFT and European Commission dawn raids and cartel investigations.
He has advised both complainants and defendants in abuse of dominance cases, particularly in the IT sector and in disputes and litigation arising from competition and regulatory matters.
He has also devised and implemented competition compliance programmes and audits for companies of all sizes, trade associations and public bodies.
He represented the Consumer Credit Association during the Competition Commission’s two-year investigation of the doorstep lending market and has advised several communications sector clients on market studies and regulatory consultations by Ofcom and the European Commission.
Angelo has advised buyers and target companies in a large number of M&A and joint ventures on the application of the UK and European Commission merger control rules as well as project-managing notifications in multiple jurisdictions on large transnational deals.
He has represented parties to mergers during OFT and European Commission merger notifications, investigations, and Competition Commission merger references.
Angelo has considerable experience in advising public and private sector bodies on the State Aid rules, exemptions, approvals and policies, particularly in respect of regeneration and transport infrastructure projects.
