Law firm scores Premier League charity success | 10 May 11
TRAINEE solicitors from leading North law firm Ward Hadaway scored a notable success with their fund-raising efforts for Premier League football club Sunderland AFC’s charitable foundation.
Eight second-year trainees from the firm (pictured left with Lynsey Thompson of SAFC Foundation, front row centre) took up the challenge to raise money for the SAFC Foundation, which provides a range of education, learning and sporting opportunities to disadvantaged children and families in the North East.
Taking part in everything from a Halloween bake sale and Christmas craft fayre to a touch rugby tournament and gruelling treadmill challenge, the team raised a total of £4,569.77 for the charity.
The fund-raising drive was undertaken as part of the SAFC Foundation’s Corporate Challenge which saw six companies battle it out to raise the most money for the charity.
Ward Hadaway’s intrepid team missed out on top slot by less than £400, but walked off with the SAFC Foundation Corporate Challenge Pro-active Team Award for organising the most number of events and using the lowest number of SAFC credits of all the teams taking part.
Ward Hadaway team member and trainee solicitor Donna Hunwick said: “The SAFC Foundation is a really worthwhile cause and the Corporate Challenge became a real team event, bringing together colleagues right across the firm to support our cause.
“We also received brilliant support from a long list of local businesses who teamed up to offer their support by way of donations and provision of equipment and facilities, including Metro Radio Arena, Newcastle Falcons, Stewart & Co caterers, Anna Barnes cupcakes, Vanilla Dreams cupcakes, Tyneside Cinema, Lynne Davies, Majestic Wines, Malmaison, Six at the Baltic, Tokyo, Pitcher and Piano, Barry Pells Photo, Esporta and the Galleries Washington.
“This was a real team effort in all respects and proved a very rewarding experience for all of us on the team.”
Ward Hadaway is a long-standing supporter of the SAFC Foundation’s work and is a Corporate Member of the charity.
The law firm’s managing partner Jamie Martin is head of the Foundation’s Development Board.
Jamie Martin said: “This was a fantastic effort by our second year trainee solicitors to have staged so many activities and raised so much money at the same time as meeting the demands of pursuing their legal careers.
“It is also a great demonstration of our belief as a firm in the importance of commitment to the community in which we work.”
In 2011, SAFC Foundation worked with more than 40,000 young people and their families through a variety of programmes at the Stadium of Light and within the local community.
Lynsey Thompson from SAFC Foundation commented: “We’re very grateful of the support that Ward Hadaway and their team have given us and the money raised from their efforts will make a very real difference to lives in the North East.
“With the level of initiative and enthusiasm shown they are a credit to themselves and Ward Hadaway.”
