No place like home for prize-winning student | 25 July 07

Law firm Ward Hadaway is helping to provide some welcome relaxation for a prize-winning university student.

Jennifer Popplewell has been awarded £125 by the Newcastle-based firm for penning the best dissertation on her BA Town Planning course at Newcastle University.

The 21-year-old, from York, is planning to use the money for a day’s relaxation at a luxury spa following her graduation this month.
Jennifer won the prize for her study on Home Zones, a Government initiative to boost cohesion and community by reducing the impact of cars on selected neighbourhoods.

She said: “I didn’t expect to win the prize at all – it was a complete shock but a very pleasant surprise.”

Jennifer now plans to take a year out following her graduation before looking to embark on a career involving issues such as third world development.

Neil Robson, head of property and planning at Ward Hadaway, said: “Jennifer thoroughly deserves her award. Her study of the Home Zones initiative was thorough, wide-ranging and very well written.”

This is the second year in which Ward Hadaway has sponsored the best dissertation prize on the BA Hons Town Planning course at Newcastle University.

John Pendlebury, director of planning at Newcastle University, said: “Jennifer is a credit to the university and we’re delighted that she has won this award. Our thanks go to Ward Hadaway for supporting our work and recognising the students’ achievements.”

Ward Hadaway also sponsors a prize for the best dissertation on the MSc Real Estate course at Northumbria University.
