Ward Hadaway helps women’s health charity expand

LAW firm Ward Hadaway has helped a charity which promotes women's physical and mental well-being to expand its operation.

Property experts from the Newcastle office of the firm provided legal advice to Women’s Health in South Tyneside (WHiST) on its acquisition of premises next door to its current headquarters in South Shields.

The purchase, which has been funded with money from the Big Lottery Fund, will enable WHiST to increase and improve the services it offers and to help develop existing and new partnerships.

WHiST was established in 1985 by a group of women from South Tyneside to improve the health, wellbeing, education and quality of life of women in the area.

Over the past 29 years, the charity has grown to provide a wide range of services to women across South Tyneside, including counseling, personal development courses, support groups, advice and guidance and a crèche.

The new building next to WHiST’s headquarters in Mile End Road in South Shields will enable the charity to continue expanding the support it provides and to help even more women across the borough.

Angela Oxberry, Chief Executive Officer at Women’s Health in South Tyneside, said: “The building was acquired to address the increasing demand for services which we are experiencing and to provide much-needed additional space.

“It will allow the opportunity to further develop existing and new partnerships to increase and improve the services we offer.

“We envisage increasing the diversity of women accessing services as well as the diversity of agencies offering their services to our members.

“The planned refurbishment will provide more multi-purpose training/conference facilities, extra counselling/consultation rooms, a new therapy room and much needed office space for volunteers and staff.”

Heather Markham, Partner in the Property team at Ward Hadaway, provided legal advice to WHiST on the acquisition of the new building.

Angela Oxberry said: “We are very grateful to Heather and the team at Ward Hadaway for the help and support they have provided for us on this important move for WHiST.

“We would also like to thank Chris Pearson, Chartered Surveyor from Gavin Black and Partners for guiding us through the purchase process, their knowledge and experience was of great value.”

Heather Markham said: “WHiST carries out fantastic work to boost women’s physical and mental well-being so it was very rewarding to be able to play a part in the charity’s expansion.

“With larger premises and plans to expand the services it provides, the future looks bright for WHiST.”
